One Small Step into Audiobooks

I've finally gone and done it: taken the first steps toward turning my body of printed and e-published work into audiobooks. ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange) really does make it easy, and based on my first experience with them, I have a feeling I'll be doing this again.

Last week, I decided it was finally time to check out ACX and see what was involved. In less than an hour, I'd selected Soul Smuggler as my guinea pig and set it up to receive auditions. I wanted a middle-aged male narrator with a general US accent who could do "brooding" fairly well. I searched through the available narrators and found Mike Vendetti, who fit the bill. I made Mr. Vendetti an offer (50/50 royalty split, since I refuse to invest anything other than time and effort into my writing hobby) and waited to see what happened.

The next day, I received Mr. Vendetti's audition (a reading of the first couple pages), and he nailed it. Seriously, the best Mercer I could have asked for. Now he's in the process of recording the complete audiobook, and it should be ready by the end of November.

How's that for an introduction to ACX? Up next: Captain Quasar, Coyote Cal, Charlie Madison, and the rest of my menagerie!
